Fireworks Schedules

Locally, many communities on the North Shore schedule their fireworks and parades on July 3, 2011. Did I just say parade? Always a fabulous prelude to the fireworks, many of our local communities have Horribles Parades as well. What is a “Horribles Parade” you may ask? Well, it is pretty much a parade for the people by the people!!! It is usually humorous, the more unsophisticated the better, opinionated and features homemade floats and costumes. Those parade schedules are below as well.

July 3, Sunday

Gloucester – Horribles Parade starts @ High School 6PM Fireworks over Harbor 9:30

Danvers – Fireworks Festival Plains Park 7PM (rides, music, kids games) Fireworks 9:30ish

Swampscott & Lynn – Fireworks Kings Beach @dusk (rain date July 5)

July 4, Monday

Beverly Farms – Horribles Parade Hale St., starts @ Oak St.8AM Fireworks West Beach @dusk

Marblehead – Horribles Parade 10AM Waterfront Festival all day Fireworks 9PM

St. Peters Fiesta Schedule, Gloucester MA

St. Peters Fiesta in Gloucester MA is an iconic tradition centered on faith, family and fishing. The Fiesta is based on the faith of the fisherman in asking the patron saint of fisherman (from the Catholic tradition), St. Peter, to keep them safe in the upcoming year, gratitude for the past year of fishing and solomn recognition of any fisherman

A Procession from St. Peters Fiesta

(and his family) who lost his life at sea. Although now well known for the athletic events associated with this three day celebration, especially the greasy pole, the most profound part of St. Peters Fiesta is the solomn tradition of processions and the open air mass on Sunday morning. Most people mark their calendar to attend the greasy pole events but 10 AM Sunday mass in St. Peters Park is the most moving event of the entire Fiesta in my opinion.

Friday is Earth Day and there’s lots going on this weekend including free concerts on Boston Common and at the Cape Ann Brewery here in Gloucester. Saturday many of us will be meeting at Stage Fort Park to help clean up the litter that has accumulated over the winter. (Some “blown” some littered on purpose. Don’t get me started!) Starting at 9AM or so you can show up, pick up trash bags and then pick up trash. I’ll be grabbing bags and going back to my own neighborhood near the high school. Gloucester Fisherman starts race …

Today saw the running of the first annual 7 mile Run Gloucester! road race. Over 1000 runners were expected including some with world class stature. Organizer Dave McGillivray of DMSE Sports is well known for staging well run events (pun intended!). Saucony, Gloucester Times, Dunkin Donuts and others sponsored and proceeds go to Gloucester Fisherman Athletic Association.

Horribles rule …

We love Independence Day and our horribles parade here in Gloucester MA. Every 3rd of July starting early in the morning people are setting up the concert stage on the Boulevard, getting the hot dogs and balloons ready putting the last minute touches on the floats and staking out their territory for good parade seats along the route. Later in the day, the bands, floats and “horribles” assemble in the parking lot of Gloucester High School, ready for the fire engines to lead the way at 6PM. And then the crowd comes and its parade time.

When it’s all said and done, it’s off to the Boulevard for the bands and fireworks. Happy 4th.

Chocolate Oreo Ice Cream …

Patty’s folks started the tradition when she was a little kid: making peach ice cream from scratch on or about the 4th of July. 4 or 5 years ago, we went looking for “the gear”. Google helped us find the White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer, complete with electric motor. So about $300 later (the motor was more half the cost but worth it) we were ready, or so we thought. One of the key, and I mean KEY ingredients is rock salt. Yup. Rock salt. You need it to make the ice around the stainless steel container melt faster, causing a … blah blah blah. Suffice to say “no rock salt, no ice cream”. Also remember, it’s July in Gloucester MA. “you want rock salt???” 4 or 5 stores later, I had a 5lb. bag. The rest is in the video.
