Compost crock for recycling in the kitchen

Compost crock

Redoubling our recycling efforts on many fronts, we are depositing food scraps in this beautiful crock and adding them to our compost pile.  I’m always looking for ways to add nutrition  to our tomatoe garden soil and this is another source for the compost.  Did you know that the soil “critters” (microbes) like sugar as much as we do?   In fact, I feed our plants molasses (watered down) several times a summer to make sure the soil bacteria are very happy while they do their thing… I’ve also come to appreciate the fact I’m not running our expensive Gloucester water because we are using the  garbage disposal so much less frequently, as we recycle our food scraps.  Lisa Vincent of simplydaisy custom made (!) this crock.  So, this next level of recycling is like handling a work of art every day.  And no it doesn’t smell… we empty it every 1 or 2 days and bon appetit to the compost pile!

Holiday giving on a local level

Our friend Brenda Malloy is donating 50% of sale proceeds from items at her Rocky Neck Gloucester MA shop Imagine to the Gloucester Education Foundation and The Open Door Food Pantry. Imagine will be open Saturdays and Sundays until Christmas. Brenda has hand made gifts from all over the world and many that she’s made herself. It’s a great way to shop locally while also helping local charities. Thanks Brenda. :)

What’s a Cape Ann ocean view worth?

Cape Ann MA Map

Like our diverse population, Cape Ann’s waterfront properties have dramatically different types of views. But for this analysis, let’s keep it simple and boil them down to 2 types: open ocean/endless horizon views vs. boat/harbor/beach views. Eastern and northern facing properties tend to be in the “open ocean” category with their dramatic sunrises, crashing ocean front and long horizon views to NH and ME. The boat/harbor/beach view properties tend to be on the western and southern side of Cape Ann, with many on one side or the other of the Annisquam River, a deep, tidal, salt water estuary about 5 miles long that’s open to the Atlantic on both ends. Gloucester’s long and wide working harbor accounts for the vast majority of the harbor views.

Cape Ann dog walk map

We’re out a lot with the pups, on and off leash, and always looking for a new place to romp. I’ve started a Google map of some of our favorites. Where do your dogs like to go? Leave a comment and I’ll add it to the map.

Gloucester Fisherman starts race …

Today saw the running of the first annual 7 mile Run Gloucester! road race. Over 1000 runners were expected including some with world class stature. Organizer Dave McGillivray of DMSE Sports is well known for staging well run events (pun intended!). Saucony, Gloucester Times, Dunkin Donuts and others sponsored and proceeds go to Gloucester Fisherman Athletic Association.

Ohhhh to be a kid again. Today’s Little League Parade went down Stacey Boulevard and right over the Cut Bridge. I was out back digging, getting the tomato garden ready and heard ‘em comin’. Sorry I missed the first couple of fire engines. But you can still hear the drummers, see the kids and the trophy’s in the video.

Puppies running around in the sun, waiting to be adopted. Doesn’t get much cuter than this at Cape Ann Animal Aid on Main St. in Gloucester’s East End. Great video.

Wilson House E. Dorset VT

A couple of weekends ago I went to E. Dorset VT to The Wilson House. Nice 3.5 hour ride out Rt. 2 and then north into VT. There’s also a great 3800′ mountain to climb, Mt. Equinox. My friend Jon and I went up and down Friday and also went to “the Falls” on Saturday. Nice trip.
