Crab apple blooms:spring 2009

Can’t get enough of these crab apple trees in bloom.  The darkest one is what they look like late at night as I take the dogs out for one last ‘blast”.  Wish you could smell how fragrant they are (the trees, not the dogs)! Yeah spring.

Residential Design and Construction @ the Seaport World Trade Center, Boston

We wanted to see what is “coming down the pike” in home construction, so we headed “over the bridge” to take in this show April 1, 2009. Green is in. Not necessarily just the color… Energy efficiency in home systems seems to be a big goal in everything from recycled glass in concrete, custom countertops (The Slab Lab) to heating your house with geothermal (heat that comes from with in the earth) energy. I love to see the “pretty” things like carpet and drawer pulls but the displays were evenly divided between aesthetics and energy efficiency. Screens that are stored “rolled up” so as not to cloud the all important views and light were displayed. It was the first time I had seen brand new (energy efficient of course!) windows with new glass made to look wavy like old glass from the 19th century. The pictures I took don’t really do this concept justice, but thats why there is a picture of a window in my slideshow! Of course there were the whole house controls (heat, lights sound, security etc.), that you can run through your iphone or another computer. I was afraid to ask questions at that display, because it would become readily apparent to all involved that I am quite a lightweight in the use and application of my iphone for the ordinary things in life! It was an interesting day that has still got me thinking. Patty Knaggs

Just a few handfuls of soil today

Started digging today!  Transplanted an odd piece of privet hedge to a gap created by a partial fence replacement.  I’ve heard it said, you can’t kill privet, but this should be a good test.  I got some smaller roots with the top growth, but I really had to cut many roots that were 1/2 to 1 inch thick with my biggest loppers!  I guess the only thing I really have going for this transplant is there are no leaves out yet (justttt starting to get green at the tips..) and the cool weather. The tall phlox is sprouting, the bleeding hearts are at least 6″ high and the lilac buds are bright green and fat.  The evening primroses are starting to get green at the soil line and the Asian lilies have sprouted also. Oh yea, the crocuses are blooming, the tulips are 6″ high and the peonies are pushing up the red sprouts through the soil.  I spread some lime I had from a broken, wet bag around my astilbe, clematis and hydrangea.  The sunflower seeds from last years plants have sprouted.  They are no bigger then a penny, which includes both leaves!

Everest attempt …

A couple of falls ago I went to Mt. Rainier with RMI Guides. 2 of the guides I met are currently on their way to attempt another summit of Mt. Everest. They have day to day progress on their site. I did the trip my self from Lukla Nepal (“world’s most dangerous airport”) through the Khumbu Valley and almost to Everest Base Camp in 2004. I love this stuff. http://www.rmiguides.com/dispatches/everest.php

Excellent example of “hire a pro” …

Would you believe this is the same house? The “plain Jane” almost looks like it’s floating, with no sense of style or presence. Adding the columns and contrasting roof line actually anchor this colonial and really make a statement. Our clients had the foresight to recognize the hidden curb appeal and were also VERY smart: they spent about $300 with an architect for a rendering that showed the new entry and shutters. That way they could show their contractor exactly what they wanted. What a difference, eh?

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

My friend Elizabeth Ryan is walking in honor of her survivor sister Elaine Horrocks. Just in case you’d like to donate but don’t know anyone walking, click to donate. The Boston Walk is on May 16 and 17. They’ll be walking 26+ miles on Saturday, 13+ on Sunday. Any and all donations will help.

Laurel Hughes in studio …

Had a terrific visit (during the last snow storm) with my friend Laurel at her studio. I found Laurel’s work to be spiritual and moving. Stills of her last show at the Nielsen Gallery are at http://tiny.cc/8PxDU .

Fein Multimaster review

This might be the most versatile tool I’ve ever owned. You can watch my video, but be careful: if you go to their website, you might buy it.

Let’s go to the movies …

I meant to post this a month ago … We went to the movies with 2 friends, something we haven’t done for ages as we usually “watch” at home. AND we went to the Cape Ann Community Cinema located at the Gloucester Stage in E. Gloucester. We had the BEST time. The movie was OK but the fact that we were “out”, with friends, at a small, comfortable venue AND got to chat with Robert Newton (the creative/managing director) afterwards made it a very “social” experience. Check out their schedule.
