I’m not a poet …

… but this offering on GoodMoringGloucester really made me laugh.

Snow farm?

Gloucester DPW has their work cut out for them this year getting rid of the snow. It’s the end of January and we’ve had 8 storms of 6 inches or more, 50 or 60 inches??? (I’m guessing!) And they have to put it somewhere. Up until a few years ago, conventional wisdom said it was OK to dump it in the ocean. (Remember it was OK to change your oil and dump it in the storm drain? WHAT were we thinking?!?!) The plowed snow is almost as dirty: it’s full of oil, trash and “street debris” so it definitely should NOT be dumped on the beach and in the ocean. So, it’s stored at Stage Fort Park, where it melts until May. Yup. May. And then DPW sweeps up the debris and none of it goes floating out to sea. That works. Leave a comment if you know of another Farm like ours!

Sea smoke

No, it’s not something you light up. It’s like fog on the harbor but not nearly as “lofty”. Take a look at the video.

Holiday giving on a local level

Our friend Brenda Malloy is donating 50% of sale proceeds from items at her Rocky Neck Gloucester MA shop Imagine to the Gloucester Education Foundation and The Open Door Food Pantry. Imagine will be open Saturdays and Sundays until Christmas. Brenda has hand made gifts from all over the world and many that she’s made herself. It’s a great way to shop locally while also helping local charities. Thanks Brenda. :)

What’s a Cape Ann ocean view worth?

Cape Ann MA Map

Like our diverse population, Cape Ann’s waterfront properties have dramatically different types of views. But for this analysis, let’s keep it simple and boil them down to 2 types: open ocean/endless horizon views vs. boat/harbor/beach views. Eastern and northern facing properties tend to be in the “open ocean” category with their dramatic sunrises, crashing ocean front and long horizon views to NH and ME. The boat/harbor/beach view properties tend to be on the western and southern side of Cape Ann, with many on one side or the other of the Annisquam River, a deep, tidal, salt water estuary about 5 miles long that’s open to the Atlantic on both ends. Gloucester’s long and wide working harbor accounts for the vast majority of the harbor views.

The China Study in Gloucester MA

Well, I just read the book and now feel like every time I eat any “animal based protein” I’m poisoning myself. Colin Campbell’s The China Study is full of testing evidence: on rats, mice and people. And it’s all spread out over more than 30 years. His story is compelling and really seems to make sense.

Horribles rule …

We love Independence Day and our horribles parade here in Gloucester MA. Every 3rd of July starting early in the morning people are setting up the concert stage on the Boulevard, getting the hot dogs and balloons ready putting the last minute touches on the floats and staking out their territory for good parade seats along the route. Chocolate Oreo Ice Cream …

Patty’s folks started the tradition when she was a little kid: making peach ice cream from scratch on or about the 4th of July. 4 or 5 years ago, we went looking for “the gear”. Google helped us find the White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer, complete with electric motor. So about $300 later (the motor was more half the cost but worth it) we were ready, or so we thought. One of the key, and I mean KEY ingredients is rock salt. Yup. Rock salt. Read More→
